We are settling into our rental house, and I’m so excited to show you the first room we’ve completely unpacked and (lightly) decorated…just not today. But soon! Today I’m going to show you the IKEA RAST makeover that is a part of that room.
Lowell and Wallace (6 and 2.5) have a shared bedroom that I hope they will both eventually sleep all night in. Ha! For now, it’s a really cute playroom, a cool place for bedtime stories, and where we keep all of their clothes.
Clothes storage for littles always trips me up a bit because I really don’t like to hang much. It’s not worth the effort! But we don’t need giant dressers for their tiny shirts and shorts, either. Plus, now that we’ve lived in an RV with a minimal wardrobe for so long, we really don’t have a ton of clothes to store- and I want to try to keep it that way.
We originally went to IKEA for MALM dressers that were on sale this summer, but these RAST 3-drawer dressers caught our eye. They are real wood, and what really sealed the deal for us was how nice the drawers slid in and out. We were not expecting that! Real wood finishes will always win our hearts, so the choice was easy. The super cheap price also helped.
I would say they were relatively easy to put together, but I also had nothing to do with that. Scott put them both together in about 40 minutes.
From Raw To Really Pretty
We’ve had a lot of luck using matte-finish paint (some call it chalk paint) on raw wood pieces in the past. This time we (and by “we” I mean Scott and Leyna- our 8 year old) used Jolie Paint in Eucalyptus and managed to paint 2 thin coats, plus apply a coat of wax in less than an hour. Matte finish paint is world-changing stuff, y’all. If you haven’t used it on a project before, you should change that immediately.
After the paint dried, we switched out the knobs for these leather pulls. They’re a little less expensive than the ones at IKEA, and I liked the darker color leather better.
With just a little effort we pulled off this…
