Our two youngest boys share a room (when they aren’t sneaking into our bed at 2 a.m.). It’s not a super spacious room, but this IKEA KURA hack is one way we’re making it work for this adventurous duo.
Quick KURA Bunk Bed Review
We started with a 2nd hand IKEA KURA bunk bed. If you’re in the market for one of these low-profile, reversible beds (when you flip it upside down it becomes a canopy bed), do yourself a favor and check Craigslist and the Facebook Marketplace first.
Check out the full room reveal here.
It retails for $180 from IKEA, but we got this one for $100, and I regularly see them for $90-$110 on our local FB Marketplace (in and around Austin, TX). Since this is a piece of furniture geared toward little kids, they are often ready for a new home long before they are worn out. Ours was in nearly new condition.
We are so in love with this bed! It’s the perfect height for our 6 and 2.5 year old. The oldest sleeps on the top, and I adore that he’s still below eye level when I stand next to the bed, making last-minute snuggles and tuck-ins so much easier. The toddler takes the bottom bed when we’re all pretending he’s going to sleep there. His Washabelle mattress sits right on the floor.
The Pegboard Hack
To maximize space, we added additional storage to the end of the bunk bed by screwing a 41×45 piece pegboard to the frame. The pegboard was $20 at Lowes, and we had them cut it to size for us. It was a super simple and inexpensive addition.
We used a few pegs to hold up baskets for toys, and added a couple more pegs for hanging Wallace’s favorite super hero cape and work vest.
Gold Basket- Target (PillowFort) $10 | Black Baskets – Lowes $7/each
As the boys grow, and their favorite toys evolve, we can rearrange this board and the storage containers to suit their needs. Even if we end up flipping this bed the other way for one kiddo to use, this IKEA KURA hack will still work!

Has your kid rolled out of the top bed since the mattress is so high?
